The situation at Chernobyl – Update

vlag Oekraïne
On 9 March, the nuclear regulator in Ukraine reported that the power supply at the Chernobyl site had been cut. The emergency generators that are present on the site can take over the power supply to the critical safety systems and can guarantee that supply for 48 hours.

The stress test conducted on the facilities after the Fukushima incident shows that additional measures have been taken to continue to ensure safety in such situations. Should it prove impossible to reinstate the power supply, the docks of fissile material will heat up only to a limited extent. This means that the possibility of any risk of radioactive release is extremely limited.

The Federal Agency for Nuclear Control (FANC) continues to monitor the situation in Ukraine together with its national and international partners. At the moment, the situation does not pose any danger to the health of Belgian citizens or to the environment in Belgium. It is therefore not necessary to take stable iodine tablets or implement shelter measures in this context.
